Prop 45 Newspaper Endorsements

Updated

Editorial boards representing 23 California newspapers have endorsed Prop 45, the Building an Affordable California Act, on the November 3, 2026 ballot. They include The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Southern California News Group's 11 daily newspapers (including the Orange County Register and Los Angeles Daily News), McClatchy's California editorial board (The Sacramento Bee, Fresno Bee, Modesto Bee, Merced Sun-Star and San Luis Obispo Tribune), The Bakersfield Californian, The Hemet & San Jacinto Chronicle and La Opinión.

The editorials say Prop 45 would make California's approval process “fairer, less expensive and considerably more predictable” and let essential projects “move forward more quickly and at lower cost without weakening California's environmental protections,” calling Prop 45 “a rare victory for common sense.”

Endorsement: Yes on Prop. 45 to reform CEQA, limit state dysfunction

“[Proposition 45] would make California’s planning approval process fairer, less expensive and considerably more predictable. In a state riddled with dysfunction, that would be a rare victory for common sense.”

“The 1970 state law makes it too easy for third parties to block or stall proposals that they don’t like or want to be paid to support.”

The debate over Prop. 45 is about California’s building future. Here is our endorsement

The board writes for The Sacramento Bee, Fresno Bee, Modesto Bee, Merced Sun-Star and San Luis Obispo Tribune.

“Prop. 45 seeks to bring long-needed reform to CEQA provisions that can add substantial costs to new homes, hospitals, water systems, roads, bridges and clean energy projects.”

“By imposing stricter deadlines on government agencies to complete environmental reviews, Proposition 45 would allow housing, transportation, water and health care projects to move forward more quickly and at lower cost without weakening California’s environmental protections.”

Our View: Vote YES on Proposition 45: CEQA is a mess; doing nothing would be worse

“For proof you only have to look at the years-long struggle to get a new, bigger Veterans Administration medical clinic built in Bakersfield. Despite Congress allocating money for the project, CEQA requirements have been abused to delay the project for years. Local veterans have been denied a much-needed facility.”

“Vote YES on Proposition 45.”
